Maker Faire Hudson Valley 2023

Home Ecology Solutions Lab

Home: New York, United States

We work on accessible and low embodied energy solutions by conducting demonstration projects and workshops that work with nature. We build passive homes out of conventional and waste materials, as well as ecological greywater microbial fuel cells.

We work on accessible and low embodied energy solutions by conducting demonstration projects and workshops that work with nature. We build passive homes out of conventional and waste materials, as well as ecological greywater microbial fuel cells. This year we are returning home to the Hudson Valley where we both grew up and studied biology. After spending a year and a half in our field research sustainable testing site at Earthship Biotecture in Taos, NM, we are bringing the solutions that we've practiced back home to our communities. Elinor is a practiced educator in greenhouse ecology and ecological wastewater treatment.

What Inspired You to Make This?

Having studied biology in our undergraduate programs, we progressed with an awareness that no matter how much we learned our lifestyles would never truly match our sense of ethics with regards to our ecological footprint. The food we ate and electricity and fuel we used was not from a sustainable source. With a firm belief that change only happens through demonstration and practice, we sought to find and share the simple and accessible solutions necessary to help transform our lifestyles into ones that fit our desired impact on our mutual home ecologies. All of our work since has been focused on the home ecology and how our human lineage can once again find its ecological state of balance and perpetuity.
