Lewis H. Latimer House Museum
A New York City landmark, the historic house of African American inventor, humanist, and son of fugitive slaves Lewis H. Latimer, the Latimer House Museum calls attention to Latimer’s and other African Americans’ contributions to science and arts.
The Tinker Lab is a key educational program at the Lewis H. Latimer House Museum, home to black inventor Lewis Latimer, to serve its communities with innovative hands-on projects treating science and technology as an integral part of the humanities.
What inspired you to make this project?:
All projects at the Latimer House Museum's Tinker Lab are inspired by Lewis H. Latimer (1848-1928), an African American inventor and humanist whose innovations in designing carbon filaments ushered in the age of electric light. Latimer was the son of fugitive slaves, a self-taught master draftsman, an expert on patent law, a poet, and a painter. Thus the Tinker Lab brings people awareness and access to technology and incorporate artistic design in its projects.
