GEAR TIME: FIXING MECHANICAL CLOCKS

GEAR TIME: FIXING MECHANICAL CLOCKS

Two full-time Massachusetts clock repairers will demonstrate basic tools and reveal age-old practices needed to fix wind-up gear-driven vintage timepieces. We will freely share information on how best to explore this challenging early technology.

What inspired you to make this project?:
For centuries, people have been spellbound when they see what lives behind a clock's face -- a brass and steel machine ticking away under its own spring or weight-driven power. We hope to bring this fascination to more people, especially when most mechanical devices today are impossible for owners to service themselves. Old clocks are widely available and easily affordable, providing great opportunities to collect them and hone long-term repair skills.
