Practical AI for Makers

Home: California, United States

AI is the current buzz word, with deep learning and other models now capable of being run on Edge Devices, aside from the Cloud. As Makers, how can we take advantage of this burgeoning field to incorporate cool new functionality into the things we make? For the beginner, this can be a very daunting field. In this presentation, we'll take a 30,000 foot view of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, especially as it pertains to Edge AI (translation-we won't get bogged down by nitty-gritty now!). We will look at the various practical applications they can be used for, the various tools and frameworks that are available to utilize, and practical considerations of how to build and deploy a robust (not toy!) model that can run on your Arduino, Raspberry Pi or other suitable MCUs/SBCs.

What Inspired You to Make This?

I created a cough detector as part of my BreatheRight project for the "Reinventing Healthy Spaces with Amazon Web Services" competition on Hackster, and was one of the finalists. I realized there is a big learning curve towards applying AI/ML in a practical setting, starting from understanding what kind of problems AI/ML can solve, and which models are suitable for which kinds of problems. I am currently mentoring students at Washington State University in their Capstone Project Program where they get to work on a year long real life project as a course requirement. One of the first things I had to help them with ramping up was to understand deep learning and the different kinds of models. I think Makers that are not familiar with AI/ML can benefit from understanding the concepts and applications from a practical perspective, which is what I hope to do in this presentation.
