Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser Extravagana

We set up 102 bottles of Diet Coke (or similar soda) with custom designed, handmade nozzle screwed to the top of each bottle. Each nozzle holds 6 Mentos candies held in by a pin. When that pin is pulled the Mentos fall and shoot a geyser 20' in the air. We set off the bottles in a choreographed fountain show inspired by the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas. We always make a point of explaining the science behind it all, and teach the audience how to make their own geyers at home and even how to make our custom nozzles. The show is a LOT of fun, for both the audience and for us. We love Maker Faire.

All BAJA teams are required to build their vehicles around a Kohler CH440 internal combustion engine (ICE). This forces teams to prioritize powertrain optimization, reduced weight, and performance. Students must utilize their knowledge of materials, design principles, dynamics, thermodynamics, and data analysis to design the vehicle. Student teams then attend a competition. Vehicles participate in static and dynamic events. Static events include a cost event, business presentation, and design presentation. The dynamic events are acceleration, sled pull/hill climb, maneuverability, suspension/traction, and endurance. The highlight of our vehicle focuses around a mountain bike suspension system to give our vehicle a smoother travel experience over rough terrain.

Steamboat Ed Haas designs 3D printed benchtop power tools for Makers that are powered by wall warts and small DC motors. He's currently working on an R/C rowboat that he hopes to release in time for Christmas. Mark H is working on electric motors that can fabricated from common hardware store items. Kris Magri, (who designed the Makey robot) is our robotics expert and she will be demoing her scratch built walkers. Steve 'Dillo' Okay will be demoing his highly modified 'Sawppy Rover' with enhanced radar and custom software. We'll also have our MIDI glockenspiel playing a few tunes

Remake of deadstock (produced but unworn, unsold pieces) transforms waste into a garment given new life and a new story. These pieces are all wild, extravagant miss velvet cream creations, all upcycled- cut, stitched, ruffled, flounced, ripped, tied, layered, embellished, stretched, and stitched again. These outfits are all sustainable fashion, handmade, and infused with meaning and value from the simplest TShirts. Let's dream together what we could wear in the future, today!

This project is my second art car based on the Studio Ghibli characters, which are always profound in their meaning. Abu the Horsefly, is one of the magical insects from the iconic Studio Ghibli movie 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.' Abu offers us an opportunity to explore our internal fears of the new, our subconscious biases towards the foreign, and our flawed standards of the beauty. This art car a true collaborative endeavor, and it perfectly fits the message of many Ghibli movies – only together we can make a difference. Kids and adults can interact with the art car by changing eye colors by touch, climbing on it. Wings and mouth move as well by using custom gearing mechanism.

Just a big fun loving robot giraffe that loves to have his nose petted, his chin scratched, and is happy to say hello to you in return! Russell is now well into his 'teens' and still going strong and very much misses his bay area friends! He is still a big huge robot, who can carry 6 adults or 9 kids quite easily, (where insurance companies allow!) and just loves to play music and walk about county fairs and music festivals, etc. He remains a star attraction wherever he appears! Though he is huge by many standards, he is very slow and gentle, his motions are strictly controlled and methodical. Having been to the first Maker Faire in 2006, Maker Faire at the White House and Burning Man, Russell continues his adventures and is happy to be back!
