Make composite structures with low VOC materials

Home: California, United States

Composite structures are ubiquitous and typically require a significant investment before fabrication can begin. I demonstrate how to use foam, glue, kraft paper, and window screen (and other low VOC materials) to duplicate much of the formability and durability of fiberglass. Perfect for fabricating small boats, bike fairings, large art installations, giant robot puppets, teardrop trailers, and theater props, this technology is very well suited for school and community groups. I will teach good techniques for cutting foam, laying up skins, and designing the structure to be durable.

I'm driven to move the needle towards utopia. I'm excited by human power, ingenuity, creativity, perseverance and follow-through. With 8 billion people on the planet we have enough mind and will power to solve all the problems facing us.

What Inspired You to Make This?

My entire life I have searched for easy, low cost, lightweight non toxic fabrication methods to make larger structures. I have finally found a collection of materials and methods that can be used to make small boats, lightweight vehicle fairings, theater props, tiny home furniture, and more! I design and build art for human powered kinetic sculpture racing. The art must be durable, eye-catching, and above all lightweight. Cheap, easy to use, and low toxicity are also highly desirable traits. After years of refining my process, I can confidently share it with others. I'll be making a small water tight pontoon and you can watch, ask questions, and maybe even get to help!
