Abu the Horsefly

Faire: Bay Area
Maker: Abu the Horsefly
Home: California, United States
This project is my second art car based on the Studio Ghibli characters, which are always profound in their meaning. Abu the Horsefly, is one of the magical insects from the iconic Studio Ghibli movie 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.' Abu offers us an opportunity to explore our internal fears of the new, our subconscious biases towards the foreign, and our flawed standards of the beauty. This art car a true collaborative endeavor, and it perfectly fits the message of many Ghibli movies – only together we can make a difference. Kids and adults can interact with the art car by changing eye colors by touch, climbing on it. Wings and mouth move as well by using custom gearing mechanism.

Porsche Carriera Camping Trailer X Honda Prelute Pickup Truck

Faire: Bay Area
Maker: Song Toh

What do you do with a modern classic that's too expensive to fix? Make a camping trailer of course! The Porsche Carriera is a camping trailer made from the back half of a Porsche Boxster, with a slide-out camp kitchen, front storage compartment, rooftop tent, 270 degree awning and quadruple bike racks. It is towed by the Prelute, itself a franken-truck-car made from a Honda Prelude coupe, and recently updated with an off-road look. These two-of-a-kind vehicles are the first builds by RennSafari, my fabrication house offering custom commissioned builds based on modern-classic RAD-era platforms.

R/C Sci-Fi stuff

Faire: Bay Area
Maker: Adam Woodworth
Home: California, United States
I build all sorts of remote control versions of my favorite toys and sci-fi vehicles from growing up. Most fly, but some are based around cars, walkers, boats, and a few submarines. The fun for me is making stuff come off that page or screen and into life. Most of my builds are small, and use common materials. I like to solve the weird aerodynamics problems of these odd flying shapes.

Trashlantis

Faire: Bay Area
Maker: 3 Feet of Air
Home: California, United States
Trashlantis is a mobile performance & kinetic sculpture, a backdrop for deep, meaningful conversations with people about the myth of recycling and the hazards of living in a 'plastisphere.' We won this year's Kinetic Grand Championship in Humboldt Country, California. Trashlantis tells a story ripped from today's headlines: plastic is creating brand-new ecosystems in the oceans. Trashlanteans are strange half-human, half-fish and half-trash beings from an ancient oceanic civilization. They comb the beaches and byways, sidewalks and highways for more plastic to build a Trashlantean civilization. They offer humans a chance to explore their relationship to this amazing material– and maybe even provide a splash of hope to those who are already working towards a toxin and trash free future.
