Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest: Hand Tool Woodworking

Home: Virginia, United States

Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest has always been committed to authentically restoring Mr. Jefferson's retreat home using traditional materials and methods. I will be demonstrating how we reproduced the classical moldings using wooden planes.

I am the Supervisor of Architectural Restoration at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. I was fortunate enough to join the team in 2021 to take part in the parlor entablature and pediment restoration. We prioritize the use of traditional materials and methods to reproduce the classical moldings such as 19th century hand planes to cut all of the profiles. I am most interested in traditional woodworking as it applies to 18th and 19th century cabinetmaking and joinery. I believe that 80% of being a craftsperson is just having the desire to create, the other 20% is easily learned.
