Obtainium Works is a makerspace in Vallejo, California that specializes in producing small art cars for events such as Burning Man, Truckee Roundhouse Maker Space, Visions of the Wild Festival, and the Mad Hatter Holiday Festival and Parade. We've demonstrated our work at all the Maker Faire events from 2006-2019. In 2023, we introduced our newest exhibit, the Robot Rumble. Using trash can robots, participants will be able to use remote controllers to create a battle with the robots in 3 minute segments. We will be displaying a number of our art cars, some of them mobile, and will have a variety of steampunk and upcycled clothing crafters selling their wares.

Animation Studio for junior makers by SnackNotes

SnackNotes presents “Animation Studio for Junior Makers,” a space where kids can have fun making their own drawings come alive! This exhibit is an activity-focused experience designed for young makers. Kids (and grownups!) can try different ways of making animations. Kids learn how to make basic two-frame animations that they can create anywhere with just a pencil and paper. Kids can also make a multi-frame animation viewable on a spinning zoetrope that can be built at home. These activities come with accompanying educational materials, fun animation examples, and templates. This exhibit is part of a new project called SnackNotes, where Brian (dad of 2 and engineer) shares creative projects that kids and parents can try at home.

The Knight

The Knight (unofficially the world’s largest chess knight) pays homage to some of humankind’s superpowers, the majesty of the horse, strategy, fire, iron, stone, bronze, and hydraulic power! This piece is for chess lovers, horse lovers, and lovers of the pinnacle of the metalcraft of the industrial era. Did you know that curved, riveted iron was born in America's shipyards? The piece was designed by Joe Mross (https://archivedesigns.com/) and Matt Burney (https://www.sometalfab.com/) and constructed in Matt’s workshop from 2022-2023 by Matt Burney, Todd Gardner, Joe Mross, and Barbara Counsil Burney. Joe handmade the molds for the portholes and they were cast by Reinmuth Foundry in Eugene, Oregon. One stone on the bench has an inlaid bronze placard with the artists’ names.
