Obtainium Works

Home: California, United States

Obtainium Works is a makerspace in Vallejo, California that specializes in producing small art cars for events such as Burning Man, Truckee Roundhouse Maker Space, Visions of the Wild Festival, and the Mad Hatter Holiday Festival and Parade. We've demonstrated our work at all the Maker Faire events from 2006-2019. In 2023, we introduced our newest exhibit, the Robot Rumble. Using trash can robots, participants will be able to use remote controllers to create a battle with the robots in 3 minute segments. We will be displaying a number of our art cars, some of them mobile, and will have a variety of steampunk and upcycled clothing crafters selling their wares.

Obtainium Works is a Vallejo based maker space that designs and builds mobile art vehicles for a number of events as well as for private clients. We are the home of the Neverwas Haul, a famous art vehicle that was at Burning Man from 2006-2015. We also have created the Robot Rumble which is an interactive robot bashing event held in an arena.

What Inspired You to Make This?

n 2006, Shannon O'Hare designed and with a dedicated team of volunteers built the Neverwas Haul, a 3-story Victorian house on wheels that is self-propelled and took it to Burning Man. That project led to more art cars that were designed and built over the past 18 years, events featuring them, and international recognition for our steampunk style. In 2022, the Obtainium Works crew started creating trash robots out of recycled materials and developed a project called the Robot Rumble, where participants can build robots and then run them against each other in a public safe arena.
