It's Sew Lit!

Home: California, United States

This project focuses on embedding technology/electronic components in cloth-based items such as embroidery and dancewear. The goal is to not only incorporate electronic components into these pieces, but to do so seamlessly.

What Inspired You to Make This?

I dance recreationally and have been sewing since I was 10. But the main inspiration for this project came from a professor who one day brought in and showed electronic components specifically designed to be sewn into clothing. A week later I started experimenting by sewing LEDs into shoes and clothing, and this project has become a fun way to combine my interests of dancing, sewing, and engineering. The project has since expanded to include pieces of embroidery that light up, and I’m looking forward to experimenting more with different cloth-based things. The real challenge is designing and creating pieces that stay light and look beautiful yet support the electronics I’m working with, and it’s been really rewarding to watch this project come to life.
