Commander Lamp Presents: Detect Your Chaos

Home: California, United States

“Detect Your Chaos” is the first body-heat-powered wearable electronics project from Commander Lamp. This project takes users on a mission to build a wearable strobe light that uses their own body heat as a power source. The device is designed to show the wearer how much chaos (body heat) they give off to their environment by strobing faster when more chaos (body heat) is released. The project is sold as a kit with an online video tutorial designed to provide a video game-like experience.

What Inspired You to Make This?

The founder, Erik Lamp, is a power electronics engineer passionate about energy harvesting and exploring alternative energy sources. He believes that a person’s body heat is an untapped power source with the potential to replace batteries in applications where charging or changing a battery is inconvenient. Erik wanted to prove this by finding an application that would effectively demonstrate it. During one of his early morning runs, he noticed how common it was for people to wear strobe lights for safety. He then wondered if it were possible to create a strobe light that was just as effective but without a battery. By eliminating the need to charge a battery, the wearer could put it on and never worry about forgetting to charge it.
