Social and Autonomous robots: the MARRtino family

Faire: Rome

Maker: Fabio Ferrarin

Innovators by vocation, making use of the collaboration with the Department of Automatic and Management Computer Engineering of the La Sapienza University of Rome, we work for the growth of the MARRtino family. In the space of a few years the family has expanded and perfected it by creating prototypes of educational and "useful" robots. Everything is open source (hardware and software) so it can be extended in any direction without constraints, an evolutionary robot as we usually define it. Based on ROS, a professional software (ROS) used in the best MARRtino research centers has been implemented and tested to perform many typical Robotics and Artificial Intelligence tasks, such as intelligent navigation, human-robot spoken interaction, image analysis.

Electric Wrecker

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Keith Johnson and Merrilee Proffitt

Home: California, United States

The Electric Wrecker was built in 2008. Modeled created from scratch, starting with the wheels and ending with the base, and everything in between this piece was transformed from a pile of parts to a beautiful electric vehicle. This vehicle is not large, showy, or loud — it is the opposite, sort of subtle in its construction and operation, but the subtlety is a feature — the more you look, the more there is to appreciate. This vehicle is hugely popular with the engineering set. We find that we receive a lot of admiration for this vehicle because of the variety of engineering challenges that it addresses.

Bodynodes

Faire: Rome

Maker: Manuel Bottini

Bodynodes is a motion capture project made by a hobbyist for other hobbyists. Sensors can be worn and track the movement of the body. Then, the information can be used for different types of applications. The most typical application is to control a character in a virtual reality game. Bodynodes makes the game more immersive than other systems because the sensors are worn and the player interacts directly with the new world. With the use of a VR headset or a VR cardboard, the player gets a fully immersive experience in the game. The tracking information can also be used to create animations for videos or new games. Instead of going through days of animations, the animator can just track their own body and then work on the data collected using the Bodynodes sensors. In the future, we will explore controlling drones and robots, transitioning from the virtual world to controlling the real world!

Tecnologie Wi-Fi Sensing: Individuazione e Re-identificazione delle persone

Faire: Rome

Maker: Sapienza Università di Roma

The project addresses person detection and re-identification tasks via Wi-Fi signals. Specifically, using low-energy and low-consumption devices such as ESP32, it is possible to analyze electromagnetic waves of the Wi-Fi signal that are altered by the presence of human beings standing between the two devices. Following a pre-processing phase, artificial intelligence was exploited to detect the presence or re-identify a human being while also respecting their privacy. The prototype comes with a MATLAB interface that allows one to visually inspect the effectiveness of the designed algorithms.
