It is also not intended for the serious practitioner who has lots of experience with composites and needs a reference book, since there are lots of those as well. In other words, you don’t have to be a Ph.D. engineer or scientist to understand the book and appreciate the significance and beauty of composite materials.

Introduction to woodturning: emphasizing safe turning practices, members of Artistic Woodturners, a local woodturning club open to all interested individuals, will demonstrate creating simple objects from wood secured in a wood lathe. As the wood spins in the lathe, sharp tools are applied to its surface, using various techniques, to create simple projects that can be completed in 20 minutes or less. Such objects such as bottle stoppers, small bowls, honey dippers and others will be crafted.

We are a 501-c-3 nonprofit, membership based playland with a full woodshop (CNC ShopBot), metalshop (hot and cold shops, CNC plasma cutting, welding), textiles lab (long arm quilter, DTG printing), laser cutters, 3D printing lab, leather work stations, jewelry making, vacuum forming, and so much more! We are on a mission to lower barriers of access to equipment and tools that empower makers. When was the last time you did something for the first time? In our booth you'll have the opportunity to make a UV resin item or do some painting on laser etched items, for those aged 8 & up. We'll have coloring pages for the very young. Come and make something with us!

This installation aims to immerse users into a meditational experience through the use of Arabic Sufi music and Islamic geometry, which reflects a faith-based art practice. By taking the user into an immersive experience of sound and light, the user’s current state of mind is encouraged to enter a trance-like state. The change in mind states is captured through the biometric signals from the EEG device, and can in turn alter the colors and geometric art displayed.

The Scion: A Hero In Motion is a superhero story that teaches science, targeted toward preteens, teens and young college students. Ray Gallagher (superhero alias “The Scion”) is a college science student with the power to manipulate the forces of nature — but only if he deeply understands them. If Ray understands gravity, he can jump extra high; if he understands heat and energy, he can manipulate fire. Through this mechanism, story and teaching are intertwined. The Scion covers topics in-depth in a pedagogical fashion, and concepts build upon each other and are revisited throughout the novel. It is The Magic Schoolbus for middle-grade, but with added emphasis on conceptual learning. We presented an earlier version online at Maker Faire: Capitol Hill. We hope you like the previews!

Inclusive project-based learning through making helps youth develop mathematical understanding, computational thinking, and spatial reasoning. The MPACT (Math and Computational Thinking Through 3D Making) team developed projects for youth in grades 4-7 with hands-on, research-based, empathy-grounded making activities. We will have a hands-on activity from a 7th grade project but works for older & younger people with the right supports. Visitors will be invited to use low-tech making materials such as cardboard, tape, foam core, and felt to design a board game for the visually impaired. They will also contribute to a group project to modify a dice using CAD & a 3D printer. Open-source guides and handouts for all projects will be available for download & the MPACT team will answer questions.
