"MODERN NORTHERN", an automatically generated art exhibition curated by artificial intelligence
Virtually Maker Faire 2020
May 22nd-23rd
"MODERN NORTHERN" is an automatically generated art exhibition curated by artificial intelligence.
It is a conceptual showcase of an automated workflow and a fine art show in itself.
It is a set of tools to make the work of artists and designers easier.
The images in this exhibition are shown in different rooms.
They have been curated with the help of unsupervised machine learning trying to find similarities between the images' features and to group them in a three dimensional space.
The placement of the groups of images are a mapping of their relative similarities as found by the algorithm. This means that the architecture of the art hall is directly given by the pictures themselves and their relationship to each other. The art hall is an informed sculpture and the exhibition can be seen as a work in itself. A modern Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art.
Using an automated workflow, the images has gone from combinations of pixels, to pictures exhibited in an art hall, ready to be visited from anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection. Digital platforms are an important tool for spreading art around the world, especially when mobility is reduced. Uploading 2D images to a feed is one way to do this, but a digital art hall can also give a spatial experience, reminiscent of visiting an actually art gallery. It also gives total freedom to the artist to create experiences that are impossible to acheive in real life.
The exhibition is a total work of art, a modern Gesamtkunstwerk.
It is based on code and it is code that enables its form.
Programs are poetry, they are words that change processes and shape reality.
Hopefully this poetry can be read, overwritten and rewritten by others as well.
