JamTaba - A Laser Cut Musical Instrument

Virtually Maker Faire 2020

May 22nd-23rd

Exhibit

The project is a mechanical music machine constructed using laser cut. The machine has a wheel with mounted triggers that hit a hand-crafted wood xylophone to produce the sound. One special feature of the project is its sound wave drawer. To visualize the sound waves of the music, a cheap laser pointer targets a mirror glued in a balloon. The balloon is inside the xylophone acoustic box to receive the air pressure and vibrate according to the frequency of the musical note. Therefore, the mirror vibrate in the same frequency and amplitude changing the laser direction and drawing a light path. This light path is direct to other mirrors to enlarge the resulting shape.
