Mask Reborn Box — System to Reuse Disposable Masks

Virtually Maker Faire 2020

We can sanitize and reuse a used mask or respirator at a low cost that even a family can become a tiny mask renewing factory. This can buy people time when an outbreak is taking place. We created a device call "Mask Reborn Box".

•Washing: A unit automatically fills with water. Next it heats the water to 70° C. Then it gently agitates (in the industrial model) or uses ultrasonic vibration (in the smaller model). As the temperature drops, it stops agitating/vibrating and reheats. The cycle continues for a set period of time until the mask is clean.
•Drying: Hot air dries the mask quickly and hygienically.
•Disinfection: UV-C light is applied in an effective germicidal dose to destroy any germs such as COVID-19.
•Recharging*: A high-voltage polarized charge is applied to imbue a static charge to the mask.

*This last step is unique to our design and the most important step for the masks to regain their effectiveness. Most mass-produced masks rely on an electrostatic charge to make the mask breathable: having a static charge effectively captures particles like the COVID-19 virus while letting enough air flow through to allow you to comfortably breathe.
