Talking to Machines — Using Speech Recognition Technology In Art
World Maker Faire New York 2018
September 22nd-23rd
Why is it interesting to talk to machines? Why do we sometimes open up ourselves to robots? Why do we find some computer voices soothing and others uncanny? Can we create art with speech recognition technology? Can we build a voice-activated system that misunderstands us, disagrees with us or leads us to unexpected outcomes?
In this workshop we will play a few voice-activated games, look at cool projects done with speech recognition technology, and find inspirations in contemporary art that play with language and voice. We will be focusing on implementing speech recognition as an interface for interaction in art installations and performances. There will also be a demo of basic coding using p5.speech.

Carrie Wang
Carrie Sijia Wang is an NYC-based multimedia artist, designer and creative technologist. Utilizing interactive technologies and media, she tells stories and curates experiences to both provoke introspective conversations and interactions between people. The juxtaposition between the real and the fictional, the rational and the absurd is a recurring theme in her work. She believes that the fictional can serve as a mirror for the real, and the absurd can oftentimes bring out the most truthful thoughts and reactions. With a BFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2012), Carrie is currently enrolled in the Interactive Telecommunications Graduate Program (ITP) at New York University (2019). Her work has been shown at Pier 92 (New York), Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, New York Transit Museum, Spokane Public Library, CultureHub (New York), De-Construkt Project Space (Brooklyn), NYC Media Lab and more.
