Questionable Carnival Rides to Shattered Dreams: Death of the Madagascar Institute
World Maker Faire New York 2018
September 22nd-23rd
Founded in 1999, the Madagascar Institute was one of the originators of the hacker space, the East Coast nexus of Art That Can Kill You, an early and persistent advocate of DIY culture, sharing skills, and safety third. Now it is dead. This talk will cover the history of the ambitious, outlaw, arguably sociopathic fringe of the Maker Movement, focusing on the Madagascar Institute, an art combine that taught hundreds, wowed thousands, and (despite our best efforts) killed zero.
Chris Hackett
Hackett was the founder and Director if the Madagascar Institute. He builds stuff, writes stuff, and is currently starting an oil company. He has not been arrested in over a year.
