[College and Making] UMass, Amherst — Untapped Potential
World Maker Faire New York 2018
September 22nd-23rd
Reflecting on 3-years of offering a makerspace course at UMass, Amherst, there are four untapped potentialities of making to higher ed: (1) integrating making to science; (2) longitudinal making; (3) cross-organizational making; and (4) the expansion of maker principles to non-technology fields.
Charlie Schweik
I am a social scientist working to understand Internet-based collective action and online commons-based peer production. These often underpin making. Over the last decade, my research has focused largely on the study of open-source software communities, and the socio-technical systems and governance structures supporting these communities. I teach a regular maker course at UMass Amherst.
