Open Source Hardware and Software

Home: New Jersey

Two open source hardware projects on display. One is a mostly 3D printed 35mm analog film to digital camera scanner. Resolves analog 35mm negatives to near their original resolution. The second is a mostly 3D printed 8mm analog film to 4K HD digital movie scanner. Both of these projects show the power of free and open source hardware projects to deliver results that are superior to most widely available commercial alternatives. The third part of the exhibition is Free and Open Source software, particularly for CAD design. We focus on OpenScad and Freecad with information to show how using this software can avoid a lifetime of paid subscription fees for closed source alternatives.

John Pickens

John has worked in Chemistry labs for 45 years, and got his first chance to see open source RepRap 3D printers at Makerfaire NYC in 2013. He hasn't looked back, designing and building 3D printers and projects which they enable ever since. The RepRap/Open Source hardware and software movement is his passion. He exhibits at Maker shows to evangelize for free and open source projects which are accessible to all, regardless of the economic status of the individual.
