Nancy Van Prooyen

I’m a PhD scientist, writer, and artist based in San Francisco, California. During the day, I spearhead innovative research in cancer and autoimmune disease treatments, while by night, I express my creative side through writing and art. Having grown up in a household where both creativity and logic were equally valued, I developed a deep passion for blending science with creative expression. As the founder of Nikola Jewelry, I design and craft pieces inspired by the beauty of science, mathematics, and medicine.

What Inspired You to Make This?

As a female scientist, I’ve always been drawn to the idea of blending my two passions: science and art. I wanted to create something that reflects both the complexity and beauty of the world around us. Math and science are often seen as rigid or purely logical, but there’s an inherent elegance in molecular structures, mathematical patterns, and biological designs. By creating jewelry that incorporates these elements, I’m able to showcase the artistic side of science while offering a unique way for others to express their love for these fields. It’s about celebrating the intersection of knowledge and creativity in a way that feels personal and empowering.
