Heat Transfer Vinyl T-Shirts Without a Craft Cutter

I've had a lot of ideas for t-shirts that would have been perfect for HTV (heat transfer vinyl) but I don't have a craft cutter. Once I realized I could use a regular craft knife, I had a lot of fun making a variety of t-shirts for myself and my family. For a kid's birthday we made matching themed t-shirts for everyone for way less than it would cost to buy or have one made. It would be a fun and inexpensive way to update an old piece of clothing or add some neat personalization.

I really wanted some super niche t-shirts, but don't like crew neck t-shirts and didn't want to invest in a craft cutter. It turns out, with some careful planning and a lot of patience, this is a lot easier than it looks. This process can be used to add cool design elements to existing clothing, add safety / visibility patches to gear, color code things, or even cover up stains to save a piece of clothing!
