Hyperbolic paraboloid wind-proof Rain and Shade cover

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: TomSawyerLabs

Home: California, United States

Do you need a shade structure for a BIG project, event, or Burningman camp? This is a do-it-yourself project that any group can make out of off-the-shelf components. The Hyperbolic paraboloid "saddle" shape is easy to achieve and has special properties. A 40’ square flat tarp could be a disaster in windy conditions. The uplift force is enough to lift the whole tarp and slam it back down. But the downward corners of the saddle prevent this from happening. If it rains, all of the water is directed to these same two low points.

Learn about CNC milling with the Union College Maker Web!

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

A computer numerical control (CNC) router is a computer-controlled cutting machine related to the hand-held router used for cutting various hard materials, such as wood, composites, aluminum, steel, plastics, glass, and foams. A CNC router is very similar in concept to a CNC milling machine. Instead of routing by hand, tool paths are controlled via computer numerical control. The CNC router is one of many kinds of tools that have CNC variants. A CNC router typically produces consistent and high-quality work and improves productivity. Unlike a jig router, the CNC router can produce a one-off as effectively as repeated identical production. Automation and precision are the key benefits of CNC router tables. It's an exciting new kind of tool that you can come experiment with!
