KidsCAN: Anthropometric Survey of Children in the Netherlands

Faire: Delft

Maker: KidsCAN Team

Home: South-Holland, Netherlands

KidsCAN (http://kidscan.tudelft.nl/) is an anthropometric survey organised by the TU Delft. In this scientific study, we are measuring and 3D scanning 1800 kids that live in The Netherlands, aged between 0 and 16 years old. The study is on behalf of the European Committee for Standardization, with the goal of improving international standards in Europe. Children's measurements will be used to better fit the products that children use everyday, like helmets, seats, and toys, as well as make spaces, like playgrounds, safer for them. At the Faire, we will showcase 3D scanning with a hand-held 3D scanner. Visitors can have their face 3D scanned or an object that they bring. We will then be able to show the 3D scan on screen, or if time allows, also make it into a model that we can share with the visitor.

Grizz, the three-wheel base vehicle, is a unique mix of go-kart parts, hydrostatic ZTR commercial tractor powertrain and custom-fabricated components created by Billy Powell. Grizz may not be the fastest tripod at the race track, but he can spin in circles from zero to 60 faster than you can yell vomit! Making Grizz the perfect base vehicle to show off the gorgeous aluminum and LED feathers from Elieen the Pearl Peacock created by Kristen Hoard. Elieen, a fan favorite at Burning Man, takes a team of six a full eight-hour day to assemble with the completed vehicle often being too tall or wide for smaller venues. Elieen and Grizz have truely formed the perfect partnership.

Blipblox by Playtime Engineering

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Blipblox by Playtime Engineering

Home: California, United States

Our Maker Story Playtime Engineering is Troy and Kate Sheets. We design and manufacture advanced electronic music toys designed for all ages. Our flagship product is the Blipblox synthesizer. The making of the Blipblox is a great example of taking your “maker” ideas and turning them into a real product and a successful business. It all started when Troy started tinkering with ways to produce synthesized sound from low cost computer chips. Using a Microchip microcontroller development board, Troy wrote the code to make a single sawtooth sound wave. From that early code grew the software that would power the Blipblox. On the hardware side, Troy wired in knobs (the board already had buttons) and the controls started to take shape. The next step was to design a PCB board that included LEDs, MIDI, buttons, knobs, and an audio amplifier. 3D printing was used to experiment with various product designs. After several years of hard work, we are extremely happy with the final product. Today, the Blipblox remains one of the only synthesizers on the market fully certified to international child safety standards for ages 3 and up. We are grateful to the Maker Community for all of the inspiration along the way. Maker Faire Exhibit Description Join Playtime Engineering at the Blipblox Sound Lab! Our Sound Lab is fun for kids (and adults) of all ages. You’ll get hands-on experience making music using Blipblox synthesizers and the all new myTRACKS music creation station.
