Sophia Gunkel Art

Faire: Delft

Maker: Sophia Gunkel

Home: Zuid-Holland, Netherlands

Welcome to the mesmerising world of Sophia Gunkel; an abstract artist who explores the intersection between her dreams and reality. Sophia is interested in exploring the blurry boundary between the conscious and subconscious being; to give shape to the intangible through her art. Experimenting with different mediums her abstract works are snapshots of her dream world, and are created with fluidity and intuition. Each new piece comes to life through layers of paint, and with each layer light, structure, and depth of colour are considered. Much like a dream, the painting takes its own shape and is only done once the artist feels that the reminiscence of the dream is captured. If you are spending time with her work, Sophia invites you to dream with her. She aims for the experience to be transportive: let your mind wander and associate. There might be things that you recognise and other parts that remain elusive or open-ended; memories or sensations that cannot be expressed with words.

Martins Miniature Marketplace

Faire: Wayne County

Maker: Martins Miniature Marketplace

Home: Ohio, United States

MARTINS MINIATURE MARKETPLACE A BLEND OF CRAFTSMANSHIP & TECHNOLOGY We are a family-owned business located in rural Ohio. Our workshop and our home are located on land from our family’s farm. Mary grew up watching the fields being plowed by actual horsepower. The windmill pumped water for the horses and cows in the pastures. A lot of craftsmanship was displayed in filling the needs of the farm work and family. Today our workshop is located in a revitalized three-bay auto body shop that was built and operated by Mary’s father. We have a solar array that provides the power we need to supply our daily needs and run the technology used to create our products. Craftsmanship is still alive as we make our ideas come to life through designs that start on paper and transform into digital graphics. The graphic forms the basis for a prototype to be cut on our laser cutter. Our products are made of a variety of materials, mostly hardwoods, and acrylic. Most pieces are prepared, assembled, and finished by hand. New techniques and tools are always being tested and added to our workflow. Our workshop is filled with wood, acrylic, and a variety of tools to allow us to create our products. We love crafting quality items and fulfilling custom orders for people. These processes blend years of experience and talent brought to us by knowledge and interest in arts, crafts, and technology. We are happy to create miniatures that provide a sense of craftsmanship and quality to our customers.

The Scion: A Hero In Motion

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Andrew Spielberg

Home: Massachusetts, United States

The Scion: A Hero In Motion is a superhero story that teaches science, targeted toward preteens, teens and young college students. Ray Gallagher (superhero alias “The Scion”) is a college science student with the power to manipulate the forces of nature — but only if he deeply understands them. If Ray understands gravity, he can jump extra high; if he understands heat and energy, he can manipulate fire. Through this mechanism, story and teaching are intertwined. The Scion covers topics in-depth in a pedagogical fashion, and concepts build upon each other and are revisited throughout the novel. It is The Magic Schoolbus for middle-grade, but with added emphasis on conceptual learning. We presented an earlier version online at Maker Faire: Capitol Hill. We hope you like the previews!
