Agency by Design: Empowering Young People to Shape their Worlds

In this session, researchers and practitioners from Project Zero’s Agency by Design initiative will present a framework for teaching and learning aimed at promoting student agency in the maker-centered classroom, a concept that they refer to as “maker empowerment.”
Edward Clapp
Edward P. Clapp is a principal investigator at Project Zero where he is a co-director of the Agency by Design, an investigation of the promises, practices, and pedagogies of maker-centered learning, and the Creating Communities of Innovation initiative, a research study geared towards supporting educators as inquiry-driven innovators.

An educator for over fifteen years, Lisa Yokana is the STEAM coordinator at Scarsdale High School. She has designed and will teach a STEAM course sequence for Scarsdale’s Design Lab, which will open in 2018. She works with teachers across the disciplines to integrate Design Thinking and Making into their curriculum.
