Sonoma Tintype Photography

Home: California, United States

Sonoma Tintype gives demonstrations of how a photograph was taken in 1855. We use the original chemicals, metal or glass plates for the image, cameras from the 1800's and other equipment from that era. We carefully explain the process and some of the problems the original photographers had.

Once interested with the tintype process, I have trained at Eastman Kodak, worked with John Coffer whom rediscovered the tintype chemical process and others to improve my photography skills and also to rebuild 175 year old view cameras and equipment.

What Inspired You to Make This?

I watched a Tintype Photographer 30 years ago at a Civil War reenactment mix chemicals, use a 100 year old camera and make an excellent, highly detailed black and white photograph. He shared the process with all those that were interested and shared the information needed to make tintypes. It was just a hobby and then a group from The Dickens Faire, while in costume asked me to take their photographs using the tintype process.
