Knew Concepts

Faire: Bay Area
Maker: Brian Meek
Home: California, United States
About Us Knew Concepts began 10 years ago when Lee Marshall, the inventor of a line of small hydraulic presses for the art jewelry world (Bonny Doon Engineering) decided to retire. That lasted about a week, then Lee was back in the workshop, taking the first serious new look at improving the centuries old design of jeweler’s saws. (or fret saws: they’re the same thing.) At this beginning point, Brian Meek signed on with his old friend Lee for a few weeks to help out while job hunting. Brian designed some of our most distinctive products like the titanium Birdcage saws and the coping saws. The first production models rolled out of the Santa Cruz shop in early 2009, and it’s been a non-stop rollercoaster ride ever since. It truly has been a case of “building the better mousetrap”. Brian remained with Knew Concepts helping Lee create excellent US made products and eventually purchased the company after Lee passed away in June of 2017. Over the years, our patented saws have won a number of innovation awards, and just recently our titanium birdcage saw was featured in a paper by a Cambridge University researcher on innovative design. Knew Concepts is a small American manufacturing company, committed to bringing our passion for quality tools to customers, and to building the best tools we know how to make. Lee Marshall said it best: “We are dedicated to helping you pursue your work and your passion for well-made tools that bring pleasure to the task. Our products may feel luxurious to use, but they are never extravagant, as they are designed and made with you and your needs foremost and are made to last a lifetime. Reward yourself for all of your hard work!”

Building machines to explore cell behavior

Faire: Bay Area
Maker: Wallace Marshall
Home: California, United States
We usually think of learning and decision making as something that only animals with brains can do. but even single cells can perform a surprising array of apparently purposeful behavior, and can even show basic forms of learning. We have been building homemade devices, controlled by arduinos, that use stepper motors to deliver calibrated stimuli to cells, allowing us to monitor their response. Using these homebrew devices, we can show that cells are able to learn, and do simple experiments to explore how they learn. In this demonstration, visitors will be able to operate the devices using buttons and switches, and see the effects on cells in real time under a USB microscope. This project shows that with a few electronic parts and an arduino, you can build equipment in your garage th

Space Palette Pro – A New Casual Instrument

Faire: Bay Area
Maker: Tim Thompson
Home: California, United States
The Space Palette Pro is the latest iteration of the 'casual instrument' style of interactive installation that I've been developing for the last decade. Similar to casual games, casual instruments provide immediately entertaining and satisfying results, with the potential for deeply expressive exploration. This latest version uses the Sensel Morph, a multitouch surface with extreme pressure-sensitivity. By finger-painting on these pads, you simultaneously play music and generate visuals. No pre-recorded media, sequences, or loops are used – everything is generated in realtime by your hands. Much of the project has been open-sourced.
