My name is Surya Konijeti, and I live in sunny San Diego, California. I am currently a 6th grade student at Francis Parker School. In 5th grade, I created the Onionator™, an original cutting board designed to decrease or prevent crying while cutting onions. After witnessing my parents cry while cutting onions, I was motivated to find a solution. Upon researching why onions make people cry, I discovered that they produce a chemical irritant called syn-propanethial-S-oxide. This led me to create a cutting board that alleviates the irritation. I presented my idea at the 2024 California Invention Convention, and it was well received because I went on to compete as a qualifier for the 2024 National Invention Convention.
