Slapstitch Embroidery
Home: New York, United States of America
Slapstitch is a one-woman traditional chain stitch embroidery shop that operates out of Queens, NY. Each piece is lovingly hand-made by yours truly from design, to fabrication, to embellishment, to you! My work is heavily inspired by a childhood one stop away from Coney Island on the D train (Gravesend, baby) and a young adulthood in a too-fast, often uncaring world. I try to pay homage to the city that raised me through riot-grrl inspired designs and motifs, and I'm a staunch advocate for slow, sloppy, manmade art.

What Inspired You to Make This?
I've always dabbled in sewing be it for fun or practical uses, but I got heavy into embroidery as a way to process my own grief. The hours it takes, the painstaking, methodical movement of the needle, the feel of thread beneath my fingertips - it all served as a form of tactile therapy when I could barely find the will to move. Historically, fiber arts have been degraded as women's work, and with that comes a lot of inherent secret-holding and vulnerability. There's a lot you can hide behind the length of a stitch, or pull out should you chose to. Witty phrases that began as a way to channel my frustration turned into a more permanent fixture in my life, and these days I find myself stitching fun things more than sad ones.
