The inspiration behind SDC really came from a need that wasn’t being met in our region. Back around 2017- 2018, Sacramento had plenty of people making games, but not a lot of infrastructure or community for those developers. Many local devs felt isolated—working in silos, without resources, mentorship, or opportunities to showcase their projects. Larger cities like San Francisco, Seattle, and LA had thriving indie communities and game dev meetups, but Sacramento didn’t really have its own hub. So, the idea for SDC was to: Bring people together: create a space where hobbyists, professionals, and students could connect. Support education & mentorship: help students and aspiring devs grow through workshops, game jams, and networking. Showcase local talent: give Sacramento devs a platform (like the Capital Creative Showcase) to put their games in front of the public, press, and industry. Build legitimacy: show that Sacramento has a vibrant creative community worth recognizing, supporting, and investing in. In short, SDC was inspired by the belief that Sacramento could be a thriving game development hub—it just needed the structure and community to make it happen
