Maker Faire Baton Rouge 2025

Giant Camera Obscura

Home: Louisiana, United States of America

Get ready to shrink down and step inside a working camera! Our massive, walk-in Camera Obscura is an immersive, educational exhibit that demonstrates the foundational science of optics and photography. This exhibit teaches visitors exactly how a camera works. You will:

  • See Light in Action: Watch as light rays pass through a single small opening (a pinhole) and project a live, inverted image of the outside world onto the inner wall.
  • Understand Inversion: Directly observe why all cameras—from your smartphone to a professional DSLR—naturally flip the image upside-down.
  • Connect the Concepts: Learn how this simple principle, discovered centuries ago, is still at the core of all modern photographic technology.
