Boxbot

Home: California, United States

In our MARS (Making Affordable Robots for Students) program, we have developed a totally hackable, low-barrier to entry, fun robotics platform that empowers students to learn how to program and modify robots. We call it Boxbot. The cardboard chassis and extremely low-cost (features compete with $300 robotics products, but it's only $30 in parts) means that almost any school, student, or self-directed learner can do real robotics. This project was developed completely by the MARS team, students developing engaging learning experiences for students.

MARS Team

The MARS team officially formed when Covid-19 shut everything down. Inspired by the NASA Mars rover teams, we invented a new kind of immersive robotics experience that students could engage with from their laptops at home. Now we make good robots.

What Inspired You to Make This?

Since 2018, students in our programs have been exploring ways to make narrative-based robotics experiences more accessible and affordable. The boxbot project is piloting new kinds of hands-on engaged learning experiences that can be made available to classrooms everywhere. We are excited for the opportunity to share our progress with the world and start engaging with more students and educators everywhere.
