Kan technologie ons misleiden via onze tastzin? En als dat zo is, hoe erg vinden we dat dan? ‘Dark design patterns’ zijn trucs in apps en websites die ons aansporen tot dingen die we eigenlijk niet willen, zoals snel op 'alles accepteren’ klikken bij een cookiemelding. Maar er bestaat ook zoiets als ‘dark haptics’: misleidende ontwerpen die onze tastzin uitbuiten door middel van haptische technologie (bijv. smartphone trillingen). In deze demonstratie laten we een aantal voorbeelden zien van hoe zulke misleiding via tast er uit zou kunnen zien in een virtual reality omgeving.

Our project brings the mechanics of complex machines to life through interactive, hands-on models. We have already completed fully functional and movable models of an aircraft engine and a car engine, allowing visitors to see and test how these systems operate in real life. By the time of Maker Faire, we will also present a hand-cranked mechanical-to-electrical generator, built with a copper-wire stator and dual magnet rotors, where visitors can produce electricity to charge their phones and small devices. In addition, a working car differential will demonstrate how power is distributed to wheels during turns. Together, these exhibits transform abstract engineering concepts into engaging, tangible experiences designed to spark curiosity, simplify learning, and inspire future innovators.

From the Guggenheim in Spain to the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the monumental and interactive walk-in sculptures of Architects of Air and designed by Alan Parkinson, have astounded audiences across the globe. Architects of Air has toured the luminaria since 1992 and visited 43 countries. The luminarium offers a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes where Islamic architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals meld into an inspiring monument to the beauty of light and colour, and where visitors can happily loose themselves. The installation awakens all the senses, creating a sense of wonder and enchantment for all ages. Visitors are transported and immersed into an amazing world of light and subtle and saturated hues, for a unique sensory experience, and brings visual art in places where you wouldn't expect it. It is a paradox that such a stimulating environment can simultaneously be so calming and comforting. Many people find a luminarium a place for rest or meditation.
