The Nekolympic

Faire: Rome

Maker: Ichiro Shimomura

The Nekolympic is a project, to create sports games ,that can be used for fitness in the room ,by combining Scratch, micro:bit, and exercise equipments. "Nekolympic" is a coined word that combines the Japanese "ne-ko",it means a cat, and the Olympics. Micro:bit senses the movement of exercise equipment and reflects it on the movement of Scratchcat in the screen. The importance of this project is that children can experience STEAM by creating their own sports games. We use cheap exercise equipment, and some have replaced kitchenware. Of cource ,you can play sports games on Nintendo game console, but the importance of this project is that children can experience STEAM by creating their own games.

EUREKA! : “Datemi un filo immerso in un liquido, dall’alto verso il basso, e vi indicherò il livello”

Faire: Rome

Maker: Giuseppe Fiordaliso

The peculiarity of this project is that it allows the measurement of the water level in all those sectors where industrial-type measuring devices are unacceptable both for the costs and for the skills required for implementation. This level measuring device uses a common insulated conductor immersed in water as a measurement probe. It consists of two parts: measuring probe with measuring electronics and microprocessor control unit. The two parts are connected via a non-polarized two-wire connection in order to simplify installation operations. The probe, of the capacitive type, consists of a simple insulated conductor wire, and can be made at a low cost and can be easily adapted by the user to his needs. The measuring range of the device goes from a few tens of centimeters to several meters without requiring particular additional components or specific components for the type of application. The measuring unit based on a microcontroller receives a digital current signal from the measuring probe and according to the settings made in the "user calibration" phase for the "empty" level and the "full" level, displays the value on a display of the level measurement in the range 0...100 %. The microprocessor also controls an output relay in correspondence with two level thresholds (low level setpoint and high level setpoint) freely settable by the user in the range 0…100% through a simple programming procedure. In the programming phase it is possible to choose whether the energized relay state must correspond to a level below the low level threshold or to a level above the high level threshold. In this way it is possible to operate an external device, always in safe conditions. The measurement has an accuracy better than 6% and is characterized by high reliability because there are no metal parts in contact with water or moving parts.

(1) Touch Deep Time; (2) Old copperplate engravings catch new light

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Norman Sperling

Home: California, United States

(1) The layers of the “Geological Column” are pages of Earth’s diary, with the oldest on the bottom, newest on top. I’m collecting the first Geological Column of rocks formed during every epoch in Earth’s history. 41 different strata you can touch, from 3.4 billion years old to contemporary — more than 3 times as many as at Grand Canyon. Backed by a striking striped panel telling ages and what Earth and Life were doing in each epoch. Feel how Earth developed! (2) When copperplate engravings gave way to lithography in the 1970s, an astronomical magazine set aside its old pictures. I've polished them, and turned them into a mobile to catch new light.

Smart Sensor for Testing Agrifood Quality & Safety at the Point of Care

Faire: Rome

Maker: Sapienza Università di Roma

The Device we present is a Lab-on-Chip. It consists of a system on glass (SoG), where are integrated photosensors for light detection, a thermalization system and sensors for controlling the temperature. The SoG is coupled with a microfluidic system where biological assay occurs and allows the detection of mycotoxins and food pathogens. The system is contained in a portable metallic box. The assays consist of specific recognition elements for the detection of the mycotoxins, which identify the target (mycotoxins) and emits a luminescent signal when the target is present. The luminescent signal is then detected by the photosensors. In the case of food pathogens, the system is able to perform a molecular test: identify a specific DNA sequence of the pathogens, which is amplified and detected by the photosensors following the luminescent signal generated during the DNA amplification. The thermalization system ensures the reactions occurring at the requested temperature.

ElectroNature

Faire: Rome

Maker: Nyíregyházi SZC Bánki Donát Műszaki Technikum és Kollégium

We are the ElectroNature team who wants to revolutionize energy production in the world. The energy crisis is noticeable, and energy has become very expensive. In this situation, we need to provide electricity to places where it used to be very expensive. In addition to existing alternative energy sources, we would like to work on a new, less known, and underutilized solution. Our idea is to develop a simple and low-maintenance piezoelectric energy harvesting system. Biomimicry is a development method that focuses on studying and utilizing models and processes from nature. We need to develop a simple and low-maintenance piezoelectric energy field and determine through a pilot project how economically viable it can be operated.
