Cutting Records with Equipment of the Past and Todays Technology

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Razzy Records

Home: California, United States

We've refurbished 1950's era record lathes, originally used to record audio on acetate blanks by radio stations and courts in the era before magnetic tape and digital recording. By adding a modern sapphire stylus, modern amplifiers and computerized signal processing we can cut great sounding audio on polycarbonate discs (or squares) that play on any record player. Experience the fusion of technology and nostalgia as we guide you through process that creates each intricate groove, transforming raw sound into a tangible masterpiece. Time permitting, we will cut 7 inch 'single' records live for Faire attendees (for free, but only original, non-copyrighted sources).

Circular Farm la fattoria urbana circolare

Faire: Rome

Maker: Antonio Di Giovanni

Circular Farm is an urban farm, inspired by the circularity of nature. In our circular agricultural process we produce Oyster mushrooms reusing the coffee grounds from the bars and other product like medical mushrooms, micro-vegetable, flours, eggs, worm humus and compost. Our process is innovative, because we use a vertical systems of cultivation in the shipping containers, out of land. In addition to the production of mushrooms, our company produces micro-vegetables and vegetables from hydroponic cultivation systems (aquaponic system) and with a synergic garden. From the mushrooms substrate, we make a compost pile and thanks of the aerobic fermentation we produce hot water that we use in winter time for heating our greenhouse. In our Circular Farm space we organize educational tour for schoosl, experience, workshops and training for the people that want to replicate our circular system.

Handheld CNC Router

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Cameron Chaney

Home: California, United States

I'm showcasing my DIY Handheld CNC Router project! It's a portable CNC router for precise 2D cuts on the go. Users move the router roughly along a pre-set path, while the bit adjusts to compensate for user error. Sensors detect the router’s position and orientation relative to the workpiece, then shift the cutting bit as needed. Unique to my design, positioning comes from optical flow sensors embedded inside the device – like those in computer mice. This simplifies its use and enables precise machining without prior setup. I've also implemented advanced control systems for stability and precision. While this started out as my Mechatronics capstone project, I am still developing the technology and hope to eventually bring open source Handheld CNC Router kits to the public.
