Adaptable Maker Projects for Academic Classrooms

Lydia Cline

Join Diane Brancazio and Justin Schmidt of the K-12 Maker Lab at the MIT Edgerton  as they discuss how maker projects can engage students and improve learning experiences in K-12 academic classes. Integrating open-ended, hands-on, creative activities with cool tools in an academic classroom helps students develop tech skills, make personal connections to the content, formulate and resolve their own questions, and express their learning. Maker projects also reduce barriers to students taking STEM classes and pursuing a technical career path by giving them skills and familiarity with current technologies. The K-12 Maker team from the MIT Edgerton Center supports teachers in bringing these experiences to their students. Explore our resources on how to get a maker culture going in school. Along with sample projects we will focus on project design, teacher practices, and makerspace setup. Learn More

What is Maker Faire

Young Makers at Maker Faire Bay Area

What is Maker Faire?

Maker Faire is the pioneering maker event that brings together creators, innovators, and DIY enthusiasts to showcase their projects, share ideas, and inspire others. Known as “the greatest show-and-tell on Earth,” Maker Faire is a gathering where technology meets creativity highlights the power of innovative arts. Inspiring the next generation to shape our future. Originating in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area founder, Dale Dougherty wanted to bring the pages of Make: magazine to life and celebrate the stories and people behind them, coining the term “maker” and jumpstarting the maker movement.

What Makes it Different?

It’s the only family-friendly event highlighting STEM or STEAM but defying the confines of traditional educational events and emphasizes the power of play. Attendees and participants include hobbyists, tech enthusiasts, tinkers, and professionals who are eager to learn, share, and collaborate on projects in a full spectrum of disciplines, such as robotics, electronics, 3D printing, woodworking, AI, engineering and more. This annual festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness celebrating the maker movement attracts all creatives, including engineers, artists, scientists, crafters, and educators to witness the magic that happens when curiosity, craftsmanship and collaboration occurs.

Why is it important?

Maker Faire plays a crucial role in fostering a culture of innovation and creativity. It encourages everyone to explore new ideas, experiment with technology on their time, and take an active role in the creation of the world around them. In a world where technology is advancing rapidly, Maker Faire serves as a reminder that anyone can be a creator and can take on little tech yielding big results. Maker Faire is an invigorating tributary of the maker movement, inspiring creativity, collaboration, and innovation. Where people come together to share their knowledge and passions, learn new skills, and celebrate the joy of making.
