What is TURF dancing?
TURF dancing is a combination of boogaloo, miming, breakdancing, footwork, house dancing, and storytelling. It was created and developed by the urban youth of Oakland. It is a lifestyle expressed through movement and art.
TURFin 101 - Introduction Class:
During class, the students will learn the history and culture of TURF dancing from Johnny5 (the instructor). He will share how he started dancing and the impact that it has had on his life. Students will learn step-by-step dance instructions and be given guidelines on how to be successful as they learn and practice TURF dancing. Students will then spread out in the room to practice with hands-on support and assistance from Johnny5 and other TURFin members. At the end of the class, everyone will have the opportunity to “free-style” to apply the dance moves they learned during the lesson.
