Rick MacDonald became a Maker at the age of ten when his parents bought him an electronics kit for his birthday to try and prevent him from taking things apart. Ultimately he became an embedded software and electronics designer and then entrepreneur. Now on permanent sabbatical he is an active participant in the Maker Movement and hopes to pass on the benefit of some of his years of experience.

Sometimes you just can't accomplish what you are trying to do with a micro-controller and need to find a better solution. In this presentation I will show you how to get started developing programmable logic with FPGAs for those kind of projects where a micro-controller by itself just can't cut it.
What inspired you to begin investigating your topic or inspired you to make your project?:
In my professional life I worked on several projects that required FPGAs however I never had the opportunity to do the development myself. Over the past few years this technology has become more approachable for hobbyists. This year I had a project that couldn't be accomplished with just a microcontroller so I learned how to use FPGAs to accomplish what I wanted to do.
