MQTT, The Maker's Swiss Army Knife
I have used MQTT for a number of years to build systems of systems and also to integrate with large software applications.
In this presentation I will show how I used MQTT to incrementally build a very effective and expandable home automation and monitoring system from legacy and modern components.
What inspired you to begin investigating your topic or inspired you to make your project?:
I started using MQTT for my home electronics projects a few years ago and then found it incredibly useful in my professional work. I had always wanted to connect my home alarm system to the Internet and started using MQTT and Adafruit.IO to do that. Then I incrementally enhanced it to be a very good home automation system.

Rick MacDonald became a Maker at the age of ten when his parents bought him an electronics kit for his birthday to try and prevent him from taking things apart. Ultimately he became an embedded software and electronics designer and then entrepreneur. Now at retirement age he plans to actively participate in the Maker Movement and hopefully pass on the benefit of some of his years of experience.
