Students from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School have built a cell phone from scratch that has a functioning screen, can sustain communication between the phone and a computer, can make phone calls, receive phone calls, and can send a text. The phone is charged by a solar panel system.

Katharine Roberts

Katharine Roberts is interested in sustainability. She built a working cell phone charged by solar power with classmate Rose Engler, and together they won awards at both the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Fair and the Massachusetts State Science Fair. The work was also recognized with a Secretary's Award for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education.
