Vidcode

Vidcode

Vidcode teaches teen girls computer programming by enabling them to customize videos with code. Participants can film stop motion animations, code their own effects, and then share it with their friends online.

What inspired you to make this project?:
We felt like there was not enough computer science curriculum out there that connected with teen girls lives today. We asked teen girls what was missing for them in computer science resources, and they told us: they want to connect it to an existing hobby, involve their friends, and be creative. We designed Vidcode with girls in mind but it is used by all! We wanted to show kids that you don't necessarily have to be good at math or science to fall in love with code, you can get into it through arts, crafts, and digital media as well. Code is for everyone. By using filmmaking and mobile app technologies we bring kids guard down when it comes to coding. Creating videos is something they do with their friends and family all the time. The fact that they get to learn how to MAKE what they create on their phones with photos and videos every day, and pull up the hood on how these digital resources are built with code, is a life changing experience for teenagers.
