Open Source Hardware and Software

Two open source hardware projects on display. One is a mostly 3D printed 35mm analog film to digital camera scanner. Resolves analog 35mm negatives to near their original resolution. The second is a mostly 3D printed 8mm analog film to 4K HD digital movie scanner. Both of these projects show the power of free and open source hardware projects to deliver results that are superior to most widely available commercial alternatives. The third part of the exhibition is Free and Open Source software, particularly for CAD design. We focus on OpenScad and Freecad with information to show how using this software can avoid a lifetime of paid subscription fees for closed source alternatives.

Inside the Machine: Engines, Power & Motion

Our project brings the mechanics of complex machines to life through interactive, hands-on models. We have already completed fully functional and movable models of an aircraft engine and a car engine, allowing visitors to see and test how these systems operate in real life. By the time of Maker Faire, we will also present a hand-cranked mechanical-to-electrical generator, built with a copper-wire stator and dual magnet rotors, where visitors can produce electricity to charge their phones and small devices. In addition, a working car differential will demonstrate how power is distributed to wheels during turns. Together, these exhibits transform abstract engineering concepts into engaging, tangible experiences designed to spark curiosity, simplify learning, and inspire future innovators.

Mr. Slinky je mechanická instalace, která dává slavné kovové pružině nový život. Vlní se, kroutí, chvíli si to sviští vpřed, jindy se jen líně pohupuje na místě. Pohyb obstarává jednoduchý motor a pár převodů – většinu z nich jsme si navrhli a vytiskli na 3D tiskárně, protože proč ne? Chtěli jsme postavit něco, co se hýbe, baví a trochu překvapí. A taky jsme si chtěli prostě pohrát s tím, co všechno zvládne tisk z plastu, když se mu dá šance. Výsledek je kombinací ladění, zadrhávání, zlepšování – a radosti, když se to konečně hýbe tak, jak má. Přijďte se mrknout, jak může Slinky ožít s pomocí pár součástek, 3D tiskárny a zvědavé hlavy. A když budete chtít, rádi vám ukážeme i všechny ty kousky, co to nevydržely.

Using NASA's resources, our team has created an Orrery Web App that gives detailed information about the Earth and near-Earth objects, an accurate 3D representation of the Solar System, and also includes astronomy news. Moreover, Exploring Space uses 3D models and displays the movement of planets in real time, which can help learners gain a clearer understanding of space. We have designed an interactive game where people can earn points for the correct answers, which can then be used to buy useful items in the store. We have embedded CosmoBot, a trained AI, which will be able to answer all the questions using information from NASA’s resources.

Cyclekart je automobil vlastního návrhu s 50cc motorem. Jeho design je inspirován závodními vozy ze 30. let. Název "Cyclekart" pochází z USA a Austrálie, kde se s podobnými auty závodí. V Česku je náš stroj pravděpodobně prvním svého druhu. Vůz má karoserii z překližky a kovový rám. Řada komponentů pochází z motokárových dílů, zatímco 50cc dvoutaktní motor je určen pro mini-motorku. Výroba nám trvala přibližně rok.
