Solar Cat

Home: New York, United States of America

The SolarCat is a modified stray cat shelter that includes a solar powered temperature activated fan! Temperatures above 100*F can be dangerous for cats and deadly for those who cannot seek proper protection like many strays across the world. The SolarCat aims to fix this by supplying a temperature controlled fan making ordinary shelters into makeshift cooling stations. The project uses easily accessible materials like a 12V PC fan and runs on a solar charged battery meaning it can run over long periods of time

Furnow Feline Shelters

Group members: Sarim and Nikki Furnow Feline Shelters targets building temporary homes using engineering and recycled materials for strays who are unable to be placed in adoption shelters during harsh weather periods. Scorching summer heat and freezing winters leave these strays no where to go but in many places such as our own the local adoption center is filled to capacity , killing millions of strays a year. In order to target this without contributing to economical waste, we focus on building every temporary shelter without the intent to increase waste.

What Inspired You to Make This?

Our inspiration: We were inspired to make this project after watching a lifeless black cat dead by a sewer grate during a blazing summer with maggots and flies swarming it. This pushed the idea to revamp our winter shelters so it can be used year round to help with cats dying from overheating. To target this issue without contributing to economical waste we used solar power to run this fan for the strays, turning the cause of their death to the reason for their survival. Another reason for our inspiration came after recent news of our local animal shelter being filled to capacity which meant thousands of strays would be forced to adapt to the harsh summer by means of death. To prevent this tragedy we built these solar powered fan shelters purely to be temporary as a cooling station before the strays go on their adventures.
