Stony Brook Solar Electric Boat

Home: New York, United States of America

Stony Brook Solar Racing is a student-led design team dedicated to designing and building high-performance solar electric boats for two annual competitions: Solar Splash and Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP). Each year, the team constructs two vessels—a manned and an unmanned. The manned boat is 14 feet long, runs on 36 volts, and controlled via throttle and steering levers. For Solar Splash, solar panels are mounted to continuously recharge the batteries. The unmanned vessel, which competes exclusively in PEP, is a half-scale model of the manned vessel, and was originally remote controlled, but is currently getting upgraded for autonomous operation.

The Stony Brook Solar Racing Team is a student-run organization supported by the university and various partners. It features three collaborative teams: Mechanical, Electrical, and Software. The mechanical team is responsible for the hull, drivetrain, and steering system. The electrical team integrates the electrical components of the boat, such as the motor, motor controller, batteries, solar panels, controls, and wiring. The software team collects and analyzes data for battery monitoring and performance optimization.
