A Temple of Masks
Home: California, United States
A collection of masks from this world and the next adorns a temple that is built for them. Not a church, but a multi-dimensional portal that has recorded the different disguises used by beings throughout the multiverse. In this place we can be what we truly are: shrouded in mystery.

Human expression and interaction is complicated. Often we cannot properly express ourselves for a variety of social and cultural reasons. There is how we are versus how we are seen, how we appear versus how we would like to appear, which is where subterfuge comes in. A mask can be a literal disguise like the ones we are making for this temple, but they can also be ways of acting that save us from showing people what we don’t want them to see. A mask can be useful for when we want a desired outcome from another person or group of people. We all use them to hide from people or to steer an interaction a certain way. With this project we want to encourage people to contemplate the existence and use of masks in all the forms that may take. A wealth of different expressions will be embodied in all the unique faces that cover this sculpture inside and out. This temple will serve as a space of refuge and interaction where we can play out, and experiment with our use of masks.
