Penny Battery: Easy Electronics for Kids

Home: California, United States

Join 11 year old Aurelius for a fun hands on activity for children ages 5 and up. Power multi-colored LED lights with a penny battery made from household materials. A colorful poster will show children how a chemical reaction occurs to release electrons to create electrical current. All materials will be supplied to build penny batteries such as pennies, zinc washers, electrical tape, multi-colored LED lights, vinegar, and cardboard.

What Inspired You to Make This?

When I was a young child, I enjoyed learning about electronics and attended Maker Faire from 2014 - 2019.. Visiting Maker Faire each year inspired me to make many different types of electrical circuits such as squishy circuits, sewable circuits, and paper circuits. I even demoed my Play Doh circuit with a light switch at the 2023 Maker Faire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUr1VkI-tqM&t=3s When I was 7 years old, I became fasciated with chemical reactions that produced electricity such as the penny battery. Now that I am 11 years old, I would love to teach other children how chemical reactions can produce electricity by teaching them how to make penny batteries.
