Dimensional Dreams: Coral Reef

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Becca Priddy

Dimensional Dreams: Coral Reef is a 4ft wide by 4ft tall shadow box illuminated with over 300 LEDs and controlled with a button inside of a treasure chest. This project is made of 10 laser cut white acrylic layers of coral and rocks and 3 clear laser etched layers with over 10 species of tropical sea creatures. The clear etched layers with fish sit directly on top of the LEDs, creating an illusion that the fish are suspended in the water and the LED animations developed for this project gives the appearance of fish swimming through the reef. The LEDs are programmed with Arduino and the project runs on a Teensy 4.1 microcontroller.

Steam Powered Tesla Coils

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Kinetic Steam Works

Never publicly been seen before is this truly novel modulation scheme to get full range audio out of a Solid State Tesla Coil arc. This is not your standard "singing" or "MIDI" style coil! The A/D and math is done by a lowly ESP32 and the power provided by our 75 horsepower, 26,000 pound steam traction engine from 1917 and a vintage, belt-driven 37.5KVA 3-phase generator head. We also have our steam powered letterpress printing commemorative prints and several tabletop presses that you can try your hand at making your own multi-color coaster print!

Reflections for making mobile entertaining experiences

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Frank Cohen

Home: California

ESP32 and Arduino-based Internet-enabled watch project and reference architecture to make your own entertaining experiences. Many times I imagine making a mobile application connected to the Internet. For example, a watch that shows videos of my children growing-up on my wrist. And the same project is re-used for creative makers to build their own entertaining experiences. Reflections is the architecture and the wrist watch is the first application. Reflections integrates video displays, Bluetooth, Wifi, SD flash storage, sound, and a bunch of sensors (compass/magnetometer, gestures, accelerometer, time of flight TOF sensor). It is battery powered, powered managed from software, and charges from USB. It is small in size (34 mm round) and powerful from an ESP32-S3 dual core processor. Reflections software, hardware, and cloud components are open-source (GPL v3) so anyone can use it and they must contribute improvements back to the project.

Two Works by J.S. Everington: CELLULAR RESONANCE and OBSCURA

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: J.S.E. Electrical Life, LTD.

Home: Oregon

Enjoy this presentation of 2 of the early (1920-30) works of obscure ORE. City inventor J.S. Everington. Cellular Resonance investigates the earliest stages of electrochemical life. Obscura observes and reports on the invisible energy of the Aether. Sponsored in part by the Portland Natural History Museum. Cellular Resonance features a two-sided cabinet, with each side displaying a 10" x 50" LED Matrix Panel array powered by a Teensyduino 4.0 with SmartMatrix Shield, running a heavily modified "game of life" code. The code follows the rules set by the game, and with "cellular life" blooming, growing and dying back until it reaches either a time limit or a place where no more change is possible, at which point it cycles anew. Obscura is also two sided, but requires two "subjects" to place their heads inside an opening on each end to view the display. Inside Obscura is a Teensyduino 4.1 with SmartMatrix Shield running a heavily modified version of the Animartix generative art code base
