Basic Wood Working with the Union College Maker Web

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

Come and learn some woodshop basics with the Maker Web. Cut a piece of wood, drill a hole and become familiar with some common hand tools. Woodworking is the craft of shaping, cutting, and assembling wood to create functional or decorative objects, such as furniture, sculptures, or tools. In makerspaces, woodworking plays a crucial role because it offers hands-on experience with a versatile material, enabling creators to bring their ideas to life through physical projects. With access to tools like saws, sanders, lathes, and drills, makers can learn traditional skills while experimenting with modern techniques to build prototypes, customize designs, or produce artistic works. Woodworking fosters creativity, problem-solving, and craftsmanship, making it an essential medium for learning and innovation in collaborative maker environments.

Pultrusion Plastic Recycling with Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW)

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW)

Home: New York, United States

Come check out how the Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW Club) are recycling plastic bottles into raw materials for their 3D Printer! ESW students created their own Pultrusion machine to recycle campus plastic. The machine is capable of recycling discarded plastic water bottles collected on campus into 3D printing filament. ESW uses the machine to turn these bottles into something people can use instead of going to waste. They take the recycled waste turned filament and make toys, keychains and other things with the 3D printer. Come and see how pultrusion works!

Historic Cannon Gantry – Cole Randall

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Cole Randall

Home: New York, United States

Come learn about traditional craft and advanced fabrication with Cole Randall’s cannon gantry project. As part of his scholars research program, Cole constructed a ⅓ scale cannon gantry based on the field cannons of the Civil War. The goal of the project was to explore history through hands-on machine shop time by creating something that is historical but also takes advantage of modern machining technology. The design for the cannon gantry employed segmented wheels assembled in the keystone fashion, the conventional fourteen spokes, and used a typical hardwood (oak). The Gantry project is at the intersection of traditional craft skills like wood and metal working and more contemporary tools like CNC milling. It is historic and at the same time cutting edge!

Engineering Spaghetti Structures

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

Come and test your engineering skills and create a bridge out of spaghetti and marshmallows! Work with Union College students to refine your design and see how it holds up to others. Explore cantilevers, trusses and space frames as you build a bridge to span as far as possible! This project will engage basic structural concepts including: • That some shapes are stronger than others • That even weak materials can be made stronger with good design techniques • That distribution of mass is an important consideration when building a bridge • That compression and tension affect the stability of a structure • Why engineers consider tension and compression forces when designing a building or structure

Making & Constructing Dougong Brackets with Assistant Professor Sheri Lullo

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Sheri Lullo (Union College Visual Arts)

Home: New York, United States

Sheri Lullo is using 3D Printing to create reproductions of traditional Chinese wood structures. Load-bearing timber-framed structures with dougong bracketing are emblematic of traditional Chinese architecture, and their design, construction and variation are prominent themes of Professor Lullo’s course, AAH 204: Chinese Architecture. This project focuses on dougong brackets, a distinguishing feature of traditional palaces, temples and dwellings. Evidenced as early as the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), they are important structural elements made of dou (wooden blocks) and gong (bow-shaped arms or brackets) that serve to support the weight of the roof and to hold all components of the building together.

Laser Cutting with the Union College Maker Web

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

Come learn about Laser cutting and assemble laser cut STEM kits with the Union College Maker Web Laser Lab! Laser cutters are a key tool in makerspaces, used for precise cutting, engraving, and etching on a wide range of materials such as wood, acrylic, fabric, and even metal. They operate by focusing a high-powered laser beam onto the surface of the material, which either vaporizes, burns, or melts the material along the specified design. Makers can create intricate patterns, custom shapes, and detailed engravings by controlling the laser's power and speed. This makes laser cutters ideal for creating prototypes, customized products, art, and educational projects, fostering creativity and rapid iteration in a community-driven setting.

Learn about CNC milling with the Union College Maker Web!

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

A computer numerical control (CNC) router is a computer-controlled cutting machine related to the hand-held router used for cutting various hard materials, such as wood, composites, aluminum, steel, plastics, glass, and foams. A CNC router is very similar in concept to a CNC milling machine. Instead of routing by hand, tool paths are controlled via computer numerical control. The CNC router is one of many kinds of tools that have CNC variants. A CNC router typically produces consistent and high-quality work and improves productivity. Unlike a jig router, the CNC router can produce a one-off as effectively as repeated identical production. Automation and precision are the key benefits of CNC router tables. It's an exciting new kind of tool that you can come experiment with!
